Carry out more characterisations, with or without a permanent sorting line.
Choose the level of observation suited to your question: analysing a prepared sample, monitoring tipping or using a dedicated station. The method, the outputs and the checks must match the intended use.
A measurement useful across the whole incoming waste chain.
Two complementary approaches, depending on your needs.
Characterisation station
A bin tipper for 120 to 660 litre bins, a variable-speed conveyor, an analysis gantry and a scale, with results delivered in a monitoring application. Classification by type of material and automatic report; the mass of the batch is weighed, and the breakdown by material depends on the configuration (weighing by fraction or estimated breakdown).
Video analysis of containers
AI recognition of the visible materials and an estimate of the volume each time a container, bin or truck is tipped. As an option, number plate recognition links the waste stream to whoever delivered it, to be set up with your data protection officer. Suited to reception and storage areas.
Which observation for which question?
| Criterion | Characterisation station | Video analysis at tipping |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Bins or samples presented to the tipper | None: the container is analysed when it is tipped |
| Acquisition | Variable-speed conveyor and analysis gantry | Camera above the tipping area |
| Result unit | Classification by type of material; batch mass weighed, breakdown by material depending on the configuration | Visible materials recognised, volume estimated; mass estimated from density |
| Weighing | Built-in scale | No, unless weighed separately (weighbridge) |
| Limits | Representativeness of the sample | Visible objects only, closed bags not analysed, moisture not measured |
| Manual check | Cross-validation with your manual characterisations, in both cases | |
| Suitable use | One-off campaigns or checks on a waste stream to be qualified | Regular monitoring of deliveries in a reception or storage area |
Forgotten recyclables, unwanted items to set aside.
On a stream of biowaste, residual household waste or separately collected recyclables, the analysis distinguishes what can be recovered from what cannot, and makes it possible to downgrade a contaminated stream before it penalises the whole batch.
- Quality and purity of incoming waste made objective
- Control of contamination, with downgrading under control
- Records kept over time for monitoring and audits
- Sorting and collection decisions based on facts
In video analysis, mass is estimated from density, the contents of closed bags are not analysed and moisture is not measured. A capture is not a full characterisation: reliability is built through cross-validation with your manual characterisations.
